Turkish Cypriots brace for bird flu backlash

THE TURKISH Cypriot authorities are bracing themselves for a possible drop in tourism revenue after two dead chickens found in the north tested positive for the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus.

“We are worried. It [bird flu] could have an effect, not just on the north, but on the whole of the island,” Turkish Cypriot hoteliers head Turan Beydagli told the Cyprus Mail yesterday.

Bird flu sparks a war of words

THE government yesterday stepped up restrictions in the south east of the island after poultry tested positive for bird flu at a village in the occupied north, just five kilometres from the dividing line near Famagusta.

The test results, announced on Sunday, have sparked a war of words between the two sides, as veterinary experts struggle to prevent an outbreak.

US: ball in the Greek Cypriot court

US ambassador to Ankara Ross Wilson said yesterday that Turkey’s new Cyprus initiative was important, Turkish mainland media reported.
According to NTV, Wilson said that Turkey had taken important steps in the peace process. “The next developments will depend on the Greek Cypriot side,” he said.

Hefty fine for woman selling pirate CDs and tapes

A 52-YEAR-old woman from Lythrodontas was yesterday fined £3,000 by a Nicosia court after admitting to charges of trading 410 pirate CDs and videotapes in her shop.
The woman cried as her defence lawyer pleaded with Judge Angelos David to hand out a lenient punishment because of the many personal problems she has been through.
