Airports: the day of reckoning is near

A DROP in tourism and a slow rate of passenger growth is worrying airport operator Hermes, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Bob Manning said yesterday.

Education is the secret of road safety

Sir,

I refer to the constant proclamations by politicians that action is needed to improve road safety on the island.

Recently, we have had the police clamping down on drink driving and the activation of the traffic camera system, but what nobody seems to be mentioning is that the standard of driving instruction needs to drastically improve.

‘The forecast for tourism is bad’

HOTELIERS predicted more gloom for the tourism industry yesterday, but Tourism Minister Antonis Michaelides said the situation wasn’t as bad as it was portrayed.

Hoteliers’ Association (PASYXE) chairman Haris Loizides said tourism was going through a time characterised by “the winds of change”. Loizides was addressing the closing of a conference on the challenges for tourism.

Police waiting for advice on drunk drivers

POLICE chief Charalambos Koulentis said yesterday he had received no word from the Attorney-general regarding what practice his officers should use when met with drunk drivers.

“I have still received no word back from him,” he told the Cyprus Mail, nor could he give an indication of when he would.

Marfin Popular triples profits

CYPRUS’ second-largest lender, Marfin Popular Bank (MPB), said yesterday net profit more than tripled in 2006 with investors expected to focus on the bank’s new targets set out in its three-year business plan.

MPB, formed when Laiki Bank merged with Greek banks Egnatia and Marfin last year, said its 2006 pro-forma net profit grew 235 per cent to 396.6 million euros.
