Police probe dog slaughter

SEVENTEEN stray dogs were poisoned at a Limassol district shelter, with little concrete evidence as to who was responsible for the mass killing, police said yesterday.

The animals were found dead in their cages by a shelter employee at around noon on Monday in the Polemidia farming district.

Turkey says it plans to search for oil off Cyprus

TURKEY has said it plans to explore for oil and gas deposits between Cyprus and Egypt, in exactly the area the government plans to search for hydrocarbons.

According to Turkish television NTV, the Turkish Petroleum Company (TPAO) will explore for oil in a 12-mile area stretching from west of Cyprus to Egypt.

Men arrested after police sex raid

THREE men, a cabaret owner and two his workers, have been arrested on suspicion of pimping two women who were caught having sex with police informants in a hotel.
The cabaret, which is situated close to Eleftheria Square in central Nicosia, is believed by police to be a hot spot for the sex trade.

Broad support for motor racing tracks

THERE was broad cross-party support yesterday for DISY’s proposal for motor racing tracks in Cyprus.

The party’s deputy, Georgos Georgiou, told the House Communications Committee that the bill included the conditions under which operating licences could be issued, with the main aim of securing the safety of both racers and spectators.

Man held for £3,000 handbag theft

A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of stealing £3,000 and trying to cash a stolen cheque.

A Nicosia Court yesterday remanded Slawomir Palusz, 38, from Poland, in police custody for three days to allow preliminary investigations.
