£20,000 for a third child

COUPLES having a third child could receive a one-off payment of £20,000, if a bill drawn up by the Labour Ministry is approved.

In a bid to combat the low birth rate in Cyprus, the Labour Ministry has prepared a package of incentives that includes one-off payments of £20,000 to families giving birth to their third child and for every child after that.

Betting raids

POLICE carried out a number of raids on betting shops in Paphos on Wednesday night as part of their continuing clampdown on illegal gambling.

Police raided betting shops in Polis Chrysochous and the village of Timi in the Paphos district. In total, nine illicit machines and a sum of cash considered to be illegal earnings were confiscated by Paphos police.

A 17-YEAR-old Limassol boy was arrested on charges of possession and distribution of child pornography, police said yesterday.

Leaning the lessons of Lebanon crisis management

ALMOST 60,000 foreign nationals arrived in Cyprus for voluntary repatriation during last year’s crisis in Lebanon.

More than 25,000 were nationals of EU member states, 24,000 were North American and Australian nationals, 8,000 Lebanese (from the total of about 60,000, a sizeable percentage were dual nationals of Lebanon) and 1,700 Indians.

Israeli held over land in north

AN ISRAELI businessman was remanded in custody for six days by the Larnaca court yesterday on suspicion of buying Greek Cypriot property in the north.

Amir Hayam, 59, was stopped and searched when he landed at Larnaca airport on Wednesday morning on a flight from Tel Aviv.
