Two probes slated over police behaviour

POLICE behaviour is coming under scrutiny with two independent investigations in the works over recent incidents.
The Independent Police Complaints and Investigations Commission has asked for a joint investigation with the Attorney-general’s office into police behaviour in a recent case and will itself investigate another.

More coming forward with child abuse reports

REPORTS OF child abuse cases have doubled in the past two years, with one in three cases concerning sexual abuse.
The rise is being linked to more people coming forward rather than an actual increase in incidents.

The House Crime Committee yesterday heard the dramatic increase and accused the state of a lack of properly structured services to help and support victims.

Car bomb in Strovolos apartment block

A BOMB exploded in Nicosia in the early hours of yesterday morning, destroying four cars.
The bomb was placed under the car of 38-year-old businessman Michael Markides, who is currently away on business.

The high-powered device was detonated shortly after 1am in the underground car park of Markides’ Strovolos apartment complex.

Probe into credit card theft

A 26-YEAR-OLD police officer of the Limassol Headquarters was yesterday suspended on suspicion of being involved in a credit card scam.

An investigation was ordered after a woman being held at the Paphos Headquarters’ holding cells made a complaint. She said officers had used her credit card number to place football bets over the internet, spending around £500.

Weekend theft

A CONSUMER electronics store in Limassol was cleaned out during the weekend, with the burglars coming away with some £5,000 worth of goods.
The theft was reported on Tuesday by the 42-year-old owner, who reopened the shop after the long weekend.

The stolen goods included a laptop, a video projector and around 35 mobile phones of different brands.

EC decision on CY rescue loan delayed again

THE E.U. Commission has again postponed giving the government the nod to guarantee a multi-million pound loan to state carrier Cyprus Airways, airline chairman Lazaros Savvides said yesterday.

Last year, the government applied for the loan, which is contingent on making the ailing airline a viable business concern at long last.

Police arrest suspected heroin dealer

DRUG Squad officers have arrested a suspected drug dealer after putting his house in Archangelos under surveillance.

The 32-year-old suspect, who was yesterday remanded in police custody by a Nicosia judge, was arrested on midday on Tuesday just after he left his house.
