US top law court agrees to hear Obama healthcare law

The Supreme Court agreed on Monday to decide the fate of President Barack Obama’s healthcare law, with an election-year ruling due by July on the U.S. healthcare system’s biggest overhaul in nearly 50 years.

The decision had been widely expected since late September, when the Obama administration asked the country’s highest court to uphold the centerpiece insurance provision and 26 states separately asked that the entire law be struck down.

The justices in a brief order agreed to hear the appeals. At the heart of the legal battle is whether the U.S. Congress overstepped its powers by requiring all Americans to buy health insurance by 2014 or pay a penalty, a provision known as the individual mandate.

New Italian, Greek governments race to limit damage

Technocrat leaders in Italy and Greece were rushing to form governments as they sought to limit the damage from the euro zone debt crisis on Monday, with stocks and the euro rising when markets opened in Asia.

Italy’s president asked former European Commissioner Mario Monti on Sunday to form a government to restore market confidence in an economy whose debt burden is too big for the euro bloc to bail out.

Investors will pass initial judgment on his leadership when Italy’s Treasury asks investors on Monday to bid for up to 3 billion euros ($4 billion) in five-year government bonds. At an auction last week, the government’s borrowing costs surged above 6 percent and kept rising to levels well beyond what the country could afford to pay over the longer term.

Syria faces growing world pressure to halt bloodshed

Syria incurred more European sanctions and criticism from Turkey and Jordan on Monday after a surprise Arab League decision to suspend its membership for failing to halt months of violence against protesters opposed to President Bashar al-Assad.

Syria looks ever more isolated, but still has the support of Russia, which said the Arab League had made the wrong move and accused the West of inciting Assad’s opponents.

The popular uprising against Assad, inspired by revolts elsewhere in the Arab world, has plunged Syria into turmoil and devastated its economy, driving away tourists and investors, while Western sanctions have crippled Syrian oil exports.

Paris master Federer is right on time for London

JUST a week before the ATP World Tour finals, Roger Federer signalled his return to the top in timely fashion with a sensational run to the Paris Masters title.

Following a second-round rout of Adrian Mannarino, the former world number one swept past 16th-seeded Richard Gasquet, demolished Czech Tomas Berdych, the man who ended Andy Murray’s 18-match winning streak, and was far too good for sixth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Sunday’s final.

“I’m amazed by how well I played,” Federer told reporters on Sunday.

“I’m really ecstatic to have played so well this week from the first ball to the end.

“I had many attempts to win Paris-Bercy and for some reasons I had not been able to win it earlier, so it’s a special victory.”
