FIRST day in Parliament yesterday was more like first day at school for the 23 newcomers who attended the maiden plenary session of the new House of Representative and were sworn in as deputies.

Quiet, green town

SAARBRÜCKEN, a quiet town in South western Germany, is probably not top of the list of places to spend a week’s holiday, unless, like me, you happen to have family there producing nephews. That’s not to suggest that the town on the slow flowing Saar is not a good place to go — it just isn’t on the tourist trail.
