Mystery donor gives $10,000 to Bam mission

AN ANONYMOUS Limassol man yesterday donated $10,000 to the Cyprus branch of the Doctors of the World organisation after hearing a radio appeal for help to send an emergency mission to Iran to aid the Bam earthquake victims. The man contacted CyBC after hearing the appeal by Dr Eleni Theocharous, and she heard about the mysterious donation later while she was in theatre conducting an operation.

CYPRUS’ first Fencing Academy will open in the new year with lessons starting on January 9 at the American Academy in Nicosia. The Cyprus Fencing Academy in cooperation with the Cyprus Fencing Federation aims to develop and promote fencing, which was one of the first Olympic games in 1896.

Denktash Jr makes historic crossing

TURKISH Cypriot democratic party leader Serdar Denktash yesterday crossed the Green Line for the first time in 30 years to meet politicians from communist AKEL and centre-right DIKO to discuss prospects for a Cyprus solution. Denktash, son of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, crossed early in the morning for separate meetings at headquarters of both parties.

Three arrested for marriage scam

TWO Turkish Cypriot men and a woman from Moldavia have been detained by larnaca police in connection with being involved in a suspected marriage of convenience. The 22-year-old woman arrived on the island around a month ago claiming she was living with a Turkish Cypriot businessman, 43. But on Monday she married the businessman’s 34-year-old friend in the Aradippou town hall.

EU accession ‘back on track’

THE GOVERNMENT has addressed most of the European Union’s main concerns regarding the island’s accession into the bloc, Harmonisation Co-ordinator Takis Hadjidemetriou said yesterday. The island was censured last month over its performance in the areas of agriculture and maritime safety and to a lesser degree on the widening fiscal deficit.

Deputies slam share profits tax

D.I.S.Y. deputies yesterday accused Finance Minister, Marcos Kyprianou, of adopting contradictory policies on the treatment of those who lost money in the stock exchange fiasco of 1999-2001. Prodromos Prodromou and Maria Kyriacou condemned a move by the Inland Revenue to send warnings to investors to pay off taxes on profits made in 1999 during the stock market bubble.

140 companies face closure over EU deadline – Deputy calls for government intervention

AROUND 140 animal-based food industries face closure tomorrow unless they meet EU requirements on health and safety, according to Agriculture Minister, Timis Efthimiou. Speaking after yesterday’s cabinet meeting, the minister warned people would be left without jobs if those industries did not shape up fast and get in line with EU requirements.
