Taking EU to court would be a last resort

PRESIDENT Tassos Papadopoulos said yesterday that taking the EU to the European Court of Justice over the issue of direct trade with the north would be a last resort.

Speaking on his departure yesterday for an extraordinary EU summit in Brussels, the president said he had no wish and no intention of taking the EU to the European Court of Justice over the issue.

WW2 explosive detonated off Curium

A SECOND World War explosive was found and detonated in the sea along Curium beach near Limassol early yesterday morning.

The object – either a mortar shell or part of a rocket dating back to the Second World War – was discovered when a team of underwater archaeologists dived down in search of pottery.

Talat dismisses government Green Line proposals

TURKISH Cypriot ‘prime minister’ Mehmet Ali Talat has rejected government proposals calling for a partial demilitarisation of the buffer zone and the opening up 11 new crossing points along buffer zone between the two sectors of Cyprus.

Talat’s rejection was coupled with accusations that the Greek Cypriot side was attempting to “change the agenda” with its proposals.

Man in custody on suspicion of raping wife

A 56-YEAR-old Nicosia man has been arrested and remanded in custody for three days in connection with the alleged rape of his 35-year-old Bulgarian wife, police confirmed yesterday.

According to reports, the couple, who have a young child, were separated and had been sleeping in separate bedrooms for the past three months.
