Sarris brushes aside AKEL calls for euro delay

FINANCE Minister Michael Sarris yesterday rebuffed calls from AKEL to delay adopting the euro, saying that changing the 2008 target could disrupt efforts to control the public finances.

Sarris also stressed that Cyprus would lock its currency, the pound, against the euro in the middle of next year.

Pharmacists weigh in over online drugs

PHARMACISTS’ Association president Nicos Nouris yesterday warned consumers against buying medications over the internet, saying they could suffer very severe side effects.

He said it was very worrying that people had such easy access to medications on the internet, and advised the government to invest in raising awareness regarding the dangers of such purchases.

Crackdown for no-smoking areas

PUBLIC health inspectors will be handing out fines to restaurant and cafeteria owners who haven’t yet designated special smoking areas, as is provided under the 2004 Health Protection Law for the control of smoking.

The checks are set to take place in the first week of April, during surprise visits by Health Service inspectors.

Greens highlight food colouring risks

CERTAIN FOOD products containing colouring can cause allergic reactions to consumers, especially infants, a study by the Green Party has revealed.

Speaking to state radio, Green Party spokeswoman Ioanna Panagiotou said that seven products tested so far on the market were not safe could have particular health risks to some consumers.

Small quake off Cyprus

A MODERATE earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter Scale hit the region between Cyprus, Lebanon and south eastern Turkey in the early hours of yesterday, authorities said.

“The earthquake bordered on weak to moderately strong,” according to an official at the seismology centre. “It was not felt in Cyprus,” he added.

Lorry drivers suspend strike threat

TRUCK drivers of category A and D licences have suspended plans for a 48-hour strike from Monday, after failing to agree on the final details of the measures they’d decided two weeks ago.

The decision was made at the end of a lengthy meeting that took place in Chirokitia on Wednesday night. Eleven 11 voted in favour of the national strike, 13 against and three abstained.
