Jailed for stealing pensioners’ cheques

A FATHER of five has been jailed for ten months after being found guilty of stealing pension cheques from elderly people in his neighbourhood.

Unemployed Giorgos Nasif, 46, was found guilty by Nicosia District Judge Alexandros Panayiotou for 24 charges of theft, forgery, circulating forged cheques and obtaining money under false pretences.

Lillikas files libel suits over SBM claims

FOREIGN MINISTER George Lillikas yesterday filed a £1 million libel suit against DISY leader Nicos Anastassiades and Alithia newspaper in the saga over the creation of a Liquefied Natural Gas floating unit.

A brief statement said the suit had been filed at the Nicosia District Court by Lillikas’ lawyer Nicos Papaefstathiou.

Housemaid cleared of jewellery theft

A FILIPINA housemaid has been cleared by a Nicosia Court of stealing over £50,000 worth of jewellery and cutlery from the vault of her former employer.

Jinky Tulin Bacunu was accused by police of stealing £51,400 worth of jewellery and cutlery from Lenia Paraika – the elderly woman she was looking after in April last year.

Fire breaks out on green line

POLICE suspected arson to be the cause of a fire that broke out last night between the SOPAS and Aronas area of Aglandjas in Nicosia.

The fire, which started at around 9.30pm, was spotted by UN soldiers in the green line area separating the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides.

Hellenic air force training command

THE HELLENIC Air Force Training Command will be making a training trip Cyprus that will last from July 10 to 14.

The Greek delegation will be meeting with Archbishop Chrysostomos II, President of the House of Representatives Demetris Christofias and the Greek Ambassador to Nicosia Demetrios Rallis on July 11, according to the Defence Ministry.

Achilleos shoots to the top the world rankings

CYPRIOT Giorgos Achilleos is currently the best skeet shooter in the world with the high rating of 1647 points according to the latest rankings of the International Shooting Sport Federation.

Achilleos was delighted with his new ranking but is already looking ahead to possible even greater glory.
