26 years for armed robber who killed bystander

THE LONGEST sentence ever for manslaughter was handed down yesterday by the Larnaca Criminal Court, which imprisoned an armed robber who killed a bystander as he chased the fleeing criminal.

Giorgos Zanettos Tsapatsaris, 27, from Larnaca, had previously pleaded guilty to seven charges of manslaughter, armed robbery and threatening to shoot bank staff.

Woman dies from heroin overdose

A NICOSIA woman was found dead at her home yesterday morning after what police suspect was a heroin overdose.
Andri Nicolaou, 32, was found dead on her bedroom floor at around 8.30am by her brother, who later told reporters that certain drug dealers did not leave her sister alone despite her efforts to beat her addiction.

Rapist loses appeal

A MAN who was jailed for eight years for viciously raping a Latvian woman in February last year has lost his appeal at the Supreme Court.
The defendant, a 33-year-old father of three from Frenaros village in the Famagusta district, was also found guilty of kidnapping his victim and robbing her of £150 after he violently raped her in his car.

Judge jails Nigerian forger

A NIGERIAN man has been jailed for ten months after attempting to cash €600 worth of fake travelers’ cheques.

Charles Rodney protested his innocence throughout the trial, claiming that the friends and relatives of another man, also said to have been involved in the forgery, beat him and forced him into confessing everything to the police.

Egypt and Cyprus strengthen transport links

CYPRUS and Egypt signed an agreement covering the transport of passengers and goods yesterday.

The agreement was signed by Egyptian Minister of Transport Mohamed Loutfy Mansour, who is currently on an official visit to Cyprus, and Cypriot Minister of Communication and Works, Harris Thrassou.

Deportee seeks to be allowed back in

A MAN deported from Cyprus along with his family last year has appealed to be allowed back in, claiming the authorities breached his human rights and deported him on a technicality.

Kharikhanov Mayrbek moved to the island from Russia in 1992 due to health reasons and received a temporary resident permit a year later, which was constantly renewed until June 2006.
