The end of cheap food

THE ERA of cheap food is over. The price of corn (maize) has doubled in a year, and wheat futures are at their highest in a decade. The food price index in India has risen 11 per cent in one year, and in Mexico in January there were riots after the price of corn flour (used in making the staple food of the poor, tortillas) went up fourfold.

Why I am an energy consuming eco fraud…

SO MacDonald’s is going green: after trialing solar panels to heat its chip pans and recycling its cooking oil for bio diesel to fuel its fleet in the Netherlands, it is now going to convert the waste oil from 900 of its 1,200 UK outlets each week and take it for reprocessing in a special plant in Milton Keynes. It hopes to run its trucks from the 6 million litres of oil collected.
