Talks date to be fixed today

THE date of a proposed meeting between President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat is due to be fixed today during a meeting between the UN and aides to the two leaders.

On Tuesday, Talat gave a positive response to a letter sent by Papadopoulos last week suggesting a meeting within the framework of the July 8, 2006 agreement.

Pensioner dies of crash injuries

AN 86-YEAR-old woman yesterday morning died of injuries sustained in a road accident last month.

Irene Christofi from Palechori was injured on June 23 on the Palechori-Agros road after the car she was a passenger in collided with another vehicle.

AKEL ministers attend coalition’s last cabinet meeting

THE FOUR AKEL ministers yesterday submitted their resignations to President Tassos Papadopoulos but they will stay on until they are replaced, the government said.

Spokesman Vassilis Palmas said he did not know exactly when the new names would be appointed but expressed the certainty that by the next cabinet meeting, the new ministers would be present.

Cypriots in Westminster punch-up

GREEK Cypriots in the UK have run into trouble twice in the past week, both times involving the pro-Turkish Cypriot peer, Lord Maginnis.

According to a gossip snippet in the Times last week, the “sombre corridors of power were disrupted by the noise of a group of Greek Cypriots and a group of Turkish Cypriots having an almighty punch-up.”

Olympic fundraising campaign comes to Cyprus

AN INDEPENDENT organisation has begun collecting funds in Cyprus for a monument proposed to be erected on Mount Olympus, Greece. Radio adverts have asked for donations of up to £50 to fund the proposed monument, that it is said will honour all Olympic medal winners since 776BC.
