Cannabis arrest

A 33-YEAR-old has been arrested after police discovered cannabis in his car and home on Tuesday.

The man, from a village in the Larnaca district, was stopped in the town by members of the Drug Squad (YKAN). After a search of his car, police found an amount of cannabis.

EAC bids to raise prices

THE EAC said yesterday its charges needed to increase to offset the cost of soaring fuel prices, in a move criticised by industrialists as impairing economic competitiveness.

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus is state controlled and although the market has been deregulated in recent years, it remains the only power utility on the island.

Archbishop to visit Patriarch in Istanbul

ARCHBISHOP Chrysostomos II has announced that he will be visiting the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in Istanbul on August 17.

“The Ecumenical Patriarchate has set a new date for us to travel there, which we have accepted,” said the Archbishop, adding that the trip would take place just after the August 15 feast commemorating the Assumption of Mary.

Twin brothers reunited in jail

A DRUG addict will be joining his twin brother in prison after being sentenced to jail yesterday on theft charges.

The 26-year-old Georgian told the court he was a drug addict and had committed the offence to pay for his addiction to heroin.

The defendant’s twin brother was imprisoned a few months ago for similar offences. He too was a known drug addict.

Carcinogenic additive not used in Cyprus

CYPRIOT sausage and burger manufacturers do not appear to use the food colour Red 2G (E 128), following reports that the additive may cause cancer, the Public Health Services said yesterday.

“After conducting a small investigation at sausage factories, we found that they don’t use this food colour in Cyprus,” Public Health Services Head George Giorgallas told the Cyprus Mail.

‘Help me find my son’

THE MOTHER of a 37-year-old man who vanished without a trace in Paphos in February was yesterday in Cyprus appealing for anyone with any information regarding her son’s whereabouts to please come forward.

Maria Petroantonaki, who lives in Canada, flew to the island to give a statement to police regarding Nicholas’ disappearance.
