Officials face fines for failing to declare assets

MAYORS, mukhtars, councillors and members of semi-governmental boards who did not submit a capital statement will pay a £1,000 fine.

Attorney-general Petros Clerides made it clear on Wednesday that there was no way out of the decision made by the three-member Cabinet committee to fine those who failed to submit their statements.

Jailed for wanting to see an EU state

THREE Turkish nationals jailed for illegally crossing into the Republic of Cyprus yesterday told a judge that they did because they were curious to see what a European state looked like.

Their line of defence was presented to the amused judge by the men’s defence lawyer during sentencing yesterday.

Minister bids to avert Cyprus Airways strike

LABOUR Minister Antonis Vassiliou yesterday launched an initiative to try and solve the dispute between Cyprus Airways (CY) and its pilots, who are staging a five-hour strike tomorrow.

CY spokesman Kyriacos Kyriacou said the initiative would be ongoing in an attempt to prevent further strike action by the pilots union PASIPY in the coming weeks.

Tassos welcomes EVROKO support

THE GOVERNMENT yesterday welcomed the open support for the re-election of President Tassos Papadopoulos from the European Party (EVROKO).

Spokesman Vassilis Palmas said EVROKO was a party with some electoral force, which was represented in Parliament, and accounted for a significant proportion of the voting population.

Cyprus bottoms out with Estonia over women’s wages

WOMEN have a long way to go in terms of equal wages, with Cyprus still having the biggest gender pay gap in Europe.

Along with Estonia, according to a recent Eurostat report the island has been named and shamed as having the biggest gap in men’s and women’s wages, with a 25 per cent difference in earnings.
