PRESIDENT Tassos Papadopoulos last night formally announced his bid for re-election in a 20 minute speech broadcast live across the nation on all television channels.

Predictably the monologue predominantly focused on the Cyprus problem and set the scene for his presidential campaign.

Paphos rocked by weekend violence

GUNFIRE AND stabbings disrupted Sunday’s early hours in Paphos, when a Briton and an English Cypriot fell victim to separate murder attempts. The crimes are thought by police to be related, but they have not specified how.

Police have arrested a 34-year-old Scottish man thought to be involved in both incidents, a court yesterday issued an eight-day remand for the man.

Remains of missing persons laid to rest

THE REMAINS of missing Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots were laid to rest over the weekend, in sombre and emotional ceremonies across the island.

The burials took place after the Committee on Missing Persons identified the remains unearthed in graves on both sides of the divided island through DNA.

Limo owner’s frustration at further impoundments

THREE MORE stretch limousines have been impounded by police in an ongoing row over their legal status, with the cars’ owner saying they will take their case to the European courts if a solution is not found.

At present, the Road Transport Department has not licensed any of the vehicles, as there is no legislation in place governing cars measuring over six metres.

A NEW bicommunal initiative takes Cypriots on both sides of the divide back to their traditional roots.

An organic farming workshop organised by the UNDP’s Action for Cooperation and Trust in Cyprus (ACT) has been held over the last two days to promote sustainable organic agricultural practices on the island.
