Sick woman sent back to Ukraine despite carrying visa

A CRIPPLED 64-year-old Ukrainian woman was turned away at passport control after she had come to the island for treatment, Politis newspaper reported yesterday.

The woman, Gkalina Papar, is in a critical condition, suffering from a serious form of rheumatism in a hospital in Kiev and friends blame her condition on the way she was treated in Cyprus.

Cyprus could face fine for bird hunt

CYPRUS HAS yet to respond to written warnings from the European Commission regarding its failures in the protection of migratory and wild bird species.

The government last month received a first written warning regarding its controversial decision to allow two days of turtle dove hunting in May, breaching the hunting provisions of the EU Birds Directive.

EVROKO behind Tassos

THE EUROPEAN Party (EVROKO) has officially announced its decision to support President Tassos Papadopoulos in the coming presidential elections.

With 169 votes in favour, two against and one abstention, EVROKO’s central committee yesterday decided to join DIKO and EDEK in supporting Papadopoulos’ candidacy in the 2008 elections.
