Politicians hope Obama will stand by Cyprus commitments

CYPRIOT politicians yesterday expressed their satisfaction and hope over the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States.

DISY leader Nicos Anastassiades called Obama’s election a “significant change to the presidency of the United States” and expressed the wish and hope that the new president would bring a breath of fresh air to America’s foreign policy.

Shares slip back

THE NEWS of a new President in the US did not appear to have a significantly positive impact on global markets, including Cyprus yesterday.

Stocks in the US and Europe ended down, but Asian stocks earlier closed on a three-week high. In the US, the Dow Jones ended 1.7 per cent down, while in Europe, markets fell between two and three per cent.

CY signs wage deal with four of its five unions

FOUR of five Cyprus Airways (CY) unions have signed a €6.6 million wage agreements with the airline that the company says will ensure industrial peace until 2010.

Unions representing cabin crew, engineers and other staff signed the agreement under the watchful eye of the Labour Ministry. Pilots union PASIPY refused to sign, however, the airline said.

Theatre donation gets new van for the hospice

A LARGE donation of €20,000 from the ‘Shakespeare at Curium’ committee enabled the friends’ hospice of Paphos to take delivery of a much needed new van from the Opel showroom in Paphos.

The proceeds from the Shakespeare group’s summer play far surpassed the expectations of hospice chairman Stephen Willis.

Police frustration at silence over triple shooting

POLICE were yesterday no closer to getting to the bottom of an attempted triple murder in the heart of Nicosia on Tuesday night.

The victims, 30-year-old Alexis Mavromichalis, 31-year-old Panicos Glykas and 48-year-old Takis Philippou, were shot by an unknown assailant outside Digenis Morphou Club on Kyriakou Matsi Street in Ayioi Omoloyites.

Pleasant afternoon for Elsi and Oya

CYPRUS’ First Lady Elsi Christofias yesterday had a “very pleasant afternoon” with Oya, the wife of Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

The First Lady spent an hour and a half at Talat’s home in occupied Kyrenia – the birthplace of President Demetris Christofias – following Oya Talat’s visit to the Christofias home last April.
