Probe into school canteen poisoning

HEALTH Minister Christos Patsalides yesterday announced the authorities were investigating the exact causes of the mass poisoning of 22 students from Ayios Neophytos high-school in Limassol, who checked into hospital with gastro-intestinal symptoms after consuming school canteen sandwiches.

CY announces discount winter fares

CYPRUS Airways (CY) yesterday announced lower fares to ten destinations in Europe and the Middle East, with fares starting at €149 including taxes for some of the flights.

From today and until the end of this month, CY said a significant number of seats, valid until March 31 but excluding the Christmas holiday season from around December 13, would be at giveaway prices.

Mother finds daughter dead in room

A 25-YEAR-old woman from Nicosia was found dead in her room yesterday by her distraught mother.

The causes of the young woman’s death will be determined during today’s post-mortem, which will be carried out by State Pathologists Nicolas Charalambous.

The woman was found unconscious on her bed by her mother early yesterday morning.

Dutch teenager jailed for drug trafficking

A DUTCH national was yesterday sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison for the trafficking of about 11 kilograms of cannabis.

The 19-year-old man was arrested at Larnaca airport on July 14 after customs officials found the drugs packed in his suitcase.

The man co-operated with authorities, agreeing to deliver the drugs under police surveillance.

Cyprus has one of lowest cannabis rates in Europe

NEARLY a quarter of all Europeans, or around 71 million people, have tried cannabis in their lifetime, and around 7 per cent or 23 million have used it in the last year – making it Europe’s most commonly consumed illicit drug, the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) said yesterday.
