Attempted murder weapon found?

A KLASHINKOV semi-automatic may have been the weapon used during the attempted triple murder in the heart of Nicosia on Tuesday night.

The rifle was found yesterday in a field adjacent to Kennedy Avenue, and has been sent for ballistics tests to determine the caliber and whether it was fired recently. Police said the rifle’s cartridge was loaded.

Turkey must respect rules

TURKEY needs to respect EU regulations if it is ever to become a member state, EU Transport Commissioner and Vice Chairman of the European Commission, Antonio Tajani said yesterday.

A solution to the Cyprus problem, he added, would emerge through dialogue and not by sanctioning Turkey.

Action plan for Peyia death trap

EFFORTS are underway to improve safety on one of the island’s most lethal stretches of road.

The main road from Peyia to Ayios Giorgios is one of the island’s most dangerous roads, proving fatal for nine people over the last couple of years.

Discussions are now underway to take immediate measures to try and improve road safety for motorists and pedestrians.

Ministry’s plans for free laptops

THE EDUCATION Ministry plans to provide all second-grade gymnasium pupils with free laptops.

A total of 8,754 schoolchildren are included in the plan, the cost of which – €500 each – will be taken on by the ministry

After examining the various scenarios, the ministry came up with this proposal and plans to submit it to the Cabinet for approval.

Work injury

A FORTY-five-year-old man was critically injured yesterday in a work accident that took place in central Nicosia.

Andreas Hadjicostis, a tyre repair shop owner, sustained serious injuries on his face and head when a tyre he was attempting to put on a lorry exploded. The tyre’s rim hit Hadjicostis with great force.
