Employment levels still good despite crisis

UNEMPLOYMENT in Cyprus is at very satisfactory levels, though this doesn’t mean the government will rest assured, the Labour Minister told Parliament yesterday.

Presenting her ministry’s budget for 2009, Sotiroula Charalambous informed the House Finance Committee that unemployment in September reached just 3.8 per cent, according to European statistics.

Cyprus slides on European health care index

CYPRUS has dropped seven places on the Euro Health Consumer Index (EHCI) launched in Brussels yesterday, sliding from 13th to 21st in one year.

“This is a notable decline from last year,” said a statement from EHCI.

In six categories, covering 34 performance indicators, Cyprus scored 563 points out of a potential 1,000.

Compromise deal to water down smoking ban

THE HOUSE Health Committee yesterday reached a compromise on the Green Party’s proposal for a total smoking ban.

Green Party MP George Perdikis agreed to amend his bill after disagreements were expressed by AKEL and EDEK regarding a ban in all public areas and entertainment establishments.

House approves extra funds for drought

PARLIAMENT yesterday gave the thumbs-up to €50 million in additional government spending earmarked at tackling the drought.

The motion was approved by a majority of 29 votes (with 14 abstentions). The cash is part of a total package of €117.5 million included in the supplementary budget for 2008.

Recipients are asked to call a telephone number in Kenya to confirm delivery arrangements. They are then asked for personal information such as ID numbers, and told they must pay all the relevant taxes and transportation fees.
