Near-miss as stray bomb falls on Nicosia home

IT WAS a lucky miss for one Nicosia resident yesterday morning as a Turkish mortar shell crashed through her roof and into her bedroom while she was at work.

Panicked neighbours rushed to call emergency services as the practice shell – which fortunately wasn’t live – flew over the Green Line from the north, causing what witnesses described as a “deafening crash” as it came down.

Cypriot woman killed in NY crash

A 30-YEAR OLD Cypriot woman was killed by a drunk driver in New York on Sunday when the cab in which she was a passenger was broadsided violently by a Range Rover.

The female cab driver Bessy Velasquez, 41, was also killed.

Tourism sees drop for third month running

TOURISM WAS down again year-on-year in October by a total of 2.6 per cent with another 5.0 per cent drop from the UK, the island’s biggest market.

October was the third consecutive drop in arrivals this year, mainly from Britain and Scandinavian countries.

CTO seeks extra cash to boost winter tourism

THE CYPRUS Tourism Organisation (CTO) yesterday asked Parliament to approve a supplementary budget to help it boost winter tourism.

According to CTO Chairman Panos Englezos, the organisation is seeking over €4 million in a bid to improve winter tourism and effectively help the Cyprus economy.

Growing challenge for the Foreign Ministry

THE GOVERNMENT’S primary aim is to find a fair and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, while promoting its positions abroad, the Foreign Minister said yesterday.

Presenting his ministry’s budget for 2009, Minister Markos Kyprianou said the state was planning to create new diplomatic missions abroad.
