‘Pervolia crime as bad as the UK’

A 61-YEAR-old British Cypriot is considering selling up and moving back to the UK after her minimarket was burgled for the third time in just over a year.

Martha Yarnton moved back to the island with her husband six years ago. The pair opened a minimarket in Pervolia in the Larnaca district.

Limassol gears up for Junior Eurovision

FINAL preparations are underway for hosting the 6th Junior Eurovision Song Contest (JESC), which will take place at Spyros Kyprianou stadium in Limassol on Saturday.

The CyBC, in charge of hosting and broadcasting, yesterday welcomed the press, and contestants from 15 European countries.

Siderenos to face drug sentence next month

LOUCAS Siderenos, the main defendant in a massive drugs bust earlier this year, will next month appear before a criminal court for sentencing after pleading guilty to seven charges in total.

Siderenos, 60, was caught red-handed transporting 190 kilos of cannabis and 12 kilos of cocaine in the back of a truck on March 27

EP seeks more fruit and veg in schools

THE EUROPEAN Parliament has adopted a report which urges an expansion in the EU programme for distributing fruit and vegetables in schools.

The aim is to encourage healthier eating habits in children and combat the obesity epidemic. MEPs would like to see more funding for the programme and they also suggest giving priority to local seasonal produce.

Papadopoulos in hospital with back pains

FORMER President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos was yesterday admitted to hospital after being diagnosed with lumbago.

According to cardiologist Charis Fessas of Evangelistria Clinic, Papadopoulos had gone for a scheduled routine check-up and doctors deemed it preferable he spent the night in hospital after he complained of lower back pains.

Hospital fury at disappearing wheelchairs

WHEELCHAIR-pinching has become the bane of Nicosia’s general hospital, with some 20 wheelchairs having vanished since the facility opened for the public.

The complaint was made by Dr Costas Antoniades, chief administrator at the ER Department, who has gone as far as to write the Health Minister about the issue.
