Coastal property sales slump 40 per cent

PROPERTY sales in coastal areas have dropped up to 40 per cent as a result of flagging demand from foreign buyers, though prices are generally stable, estate agents said yesterday.

“There is a big decrease in demand, especially from outside and especially from the British market, who are our traditional customers,” said Solon Kourouklides, chairman of real estate agents.

Christofias hits back at Turkish criticism of Moscow trip

CYPRUS will not renounce its sovereign rights, and international relations are within those rights, President Demetris Christofias said yesterday.

He was responding to Turkish Cypriot criticism of his Moscow visit and of a joint declaration signed between Christofias and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev on the Cyprus issue.

Anti-trafficking activists grill Attorney General

ATTORNEY General Petros Clerides received a grilling from anti-trafficking activists yesterday, threatening at one point to stop participating in a discussion on Cyprus’ image as a trafficking destination.

Clerides was addressing the closing session of the three-day anti-trafficking conference in Nicosia.

Man remanded for wife’s attempted murder

A 42-YEAR-old man from Limassol was yesterday remand in custody after shooting at his ex-wife in a Limassol street. The intervention of onlookers, who grabbed the man while he was aiming at the 36-year-old woman with his hunting shotgun possibly averted tragedy.

Christofias confirms gas talks with Russia

PRESIDENT Demetris Christofias yesterday confirmed that options were being considered for bringing liquid natural gas (LNG) from Russia as well as Egypt.

But he was keen to add that no agreements had yet been signed. Discussions did, however, take place on the matter during his visit to Russia.
