Leaders trade Soviet-era jibes

THE solution to the economic crisis doe not lie in the theories of Marx and Lenin, opposition DISY leader Nicos Anastassiades said yesterday.

Addressing a party executive conference, Anstassiades referred to the government’s measures to counter any effect of the global crisis on Cyprus.

He said while the measures taken so far were good, they were not enough.

CYPRUS HAS the highest number of pensioners in the EU below the poverty line, said Panayiotis Karavas yesterday, a member of the Senior Citizens’ Parliament.

Parliament was occupied by pensioners yesterday who talked about medical care, social discrimination and pensions during the 10th Senior Citizens’ Parliamentary Session, chaired by DISY deputy Christos Pourgourides.

Where next for UK interest rates?

THE BANK of England’s 1.5 per cent interest rate cut to three per cent earlier in the month took virtually everyone by surprise – and the indications are that rates may be cut much further.
