UK Cypriot tycoon killed in bloodbath

A GREEK Cypriot yachting magnate was among the hostages gunned down by terrorists in a Mumbai hotel yesterday, moments after telling of his panic by mobile phone.

Entrepreneur Andreas Liveras, 73, holder of a British passport, was among four other people shot dead in the hotel basement, after gunmen opened fire indiscriminately.

One per cent of GDP to tackle crisis

CYPRUS will spend close to one per cent of its GDP in tackling the global credit crunch, Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis said yesterday.

“A 10 per cent increase in the implementation rate of the development budget creates an additional liquidity of €100 million for the Cypriot economy,” Stavrakis said after a working lunch with EU ambassadors organised by the French embassy.

Safety warnings for those in world’s hotspots

THE FOREIGN Ministry was busy yesterday issuing warnings and help information for Cypriot nationals in various hotspots around the world from India to the Congo.

Other than the death of a Cypriot with British nationality, the only Cypriot passport holder in Mumbai is a female student.

Labour minister tops new opinion poll

THE MOST popular cabinet member is Labour Minister Sotiroulla Charalambous, who has a 49 per cent approval rating and only a four per cent disapproval rating.

Second most popular is Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis, who has a 48 per cent approval and only a five per cent disapproval rating.

Ankle bracelets for prisoners

PARLIAMENT yesterday wrapped up discussions on a bill allowing convicts out of jail with ankle bracelets.

According to the Chairman of the House Legal Affairs Committee, Ionas Nicolaou of DISY, the measure will apply to prisoners who are serving a sentence of three months up to four years, and they will have to have served at least half of their sentence.
