Minister defends scrapie ruling

THE EUROPEAN Commission’s directive for all member states to eradicate scrapie within 18 months “certainly doesn’t satisfy us completely”, the Agriculture Minister said yesterday.

Speaking after a parliamentary examination of his ministry’s budget, Michalis Polynikis said Cyprus’ dissatisfaction had been openly expressed when it abstained during the relevant vote.

High Commissioner shocked by terrorist attacks

THE INDIAN High Commissioner in Nicosia has expressed her profound shock at the unprecedented and brutal terrorist attacks in Mumbai, which have left scores of people dead.

In an interview with the Cyprus Mail yesterday, Lavanya Prasad said she failed to understand why such bloody attacks were on the increase in her homeland.

Apoel fined for racism

UEFA has slapped a €30,000 fine on Nicosia football club Apoel, after finding that its fans engaged in racist behaviour against Red Star Belgrade.

The fine concerns the home tie against the former European champions, whom Apoel went on to eliminate on the away-goals rule in the return leg in Belgrade, late August.

Plans drawn for reduced army service

THE DEFENCE Ministry has concluded on a proposal to reduce military service, as part of its plans to restructure the National Guard.

It will soon be submitted to the Cabinet for final decision to be reached on the matter.

According to Defence Minister Costas Papacostas yesterday, restructuring the NG and reducing military service go hand in hand.

Armed robber jailed

A MAN has been sentenced to seven years in prison by Paphos central court. Petros Patsalides, of Kakkopetria village in Paphos, attacked a woman in April, who was carrying takings from her betting shop in Chlorakas. Her screams alerted passersby, who caught the man and restrained him until the police arrived at the scene. He was wearing a balaclava and wielding a shotgun during the attack.
