Offshore exploration complete in days

NORWEGIAN research teams exploring for hydrocarbons off the island’s south coast will complete their work within the next few days, President Demetris Christofias said yesterday.

Christofias, speaking at a news conference at the close of his Athens visit, made it clear that the intimidation by Turkish navy vessels would not stop the exploration.

Cyprus Airways pilots announce snap strike

THOUSANDS of Cyprus Airways (CY) passengers will face flight delays of up to five hours on Monday due to a four-hour strike by pilots.

Late yesterday CY issued a new timetable under a contingency plan but the majority of flights have been postponed until after midday on Monday when the strike ends.

Nicosia Mayor Eleni Mavrou was in London on Thursday night to present plans for the redesign of the capital’s historic focal point, Eleftheria Square, along with the project’s architect Zaha Hadid.

EOKA veterans’ anger at Kyrenia monument to their British victims

EOKA fighters are outraged over plans by Britons living in the north to erect a memorial to the 371 British soldiers killed during the Cypriot struggle for independence.

According to the website of the ‘Friends of the Cyprus Memorial’, a memorial is to be erected in the old British cemetery at Kyrenia to mark the 50th anniversary of “the ending of the Cyprus Emergency”.
