The globe trotting president

WHEN he was sworn in as President on February 28 this year, one of Demetris Christofias’ aims was to mend fences with other countries after relations had been badly damaged during the Tassos Papadopoulos presidency.

Since then, Christofias hasn’t stopped mending. He has mended fences with his hammer and sickle across three continents and ten countries in eight months.

Christofias crosses north for funeral

PRESIDENT DEMETRIS Christofias crossed to the north yesterday to attend the funeral of Zehra Ozgur, the wife of Turkish Cypriot politician Ozker Ozgur.

Zehra died on Friday, three years after her husband Ozker. Christofias, accompanied by his wife Elsi, attended the funeral at the Nicosia Cemetery, where Zehra was buried alongside her husband.

Massive Larnaca golf project planned

Greens call project ‘absolute madness’

A CONSORTIUM of local developers is expecting to receive the green light from the government to push ahead with the construction of a €300 million golf resort project.

According to the company, named Med Group, the new development will be built in Tersefanou, on the outskirts of Larnaca.

Woman planned love rival’s murder

A 25-YEAR-old Ukrainian woman planned her friend’s murder so she could take her husband, with whom she was having an affair.

Viktoriya Altayska was found guilty of the charges by Nicosia’s Criminal Court on Friday. She will be sentenced next week.

Man killed in hit and run

A 71-YEAR-old lottery seller died during the early hours of yesterday after he was critically injured in a hit-and-run accident six hours earlier.

Giorgios Georgiou was crossing Kolonaki Street in Limassol at around 9pm when a white car sped past, knocking him over. The driver of the car did not stop to help the victim, but instead rushed off in an unknown direction.
