Labour minister tops new opinion poll

THE MOST popular cabinet member is Labour Minister Sotiroulla Charalambous, who has a 49 per cent approval rating and only a four per cent disapproval rating.

Second most popular is Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis, who has a 48 per cent approval and only a five per cent disapproval rating.

Ankle bracelets for prisoners

PARLIAMENT yesterday wrapped up discussions on a bill allowing convicts out of jail with ankle bracelets.

According to the Chairman of the House Legal Affairs Committee, Ionas Nicolaou of DISY, the measure will apply to prisoners who are serving a sentence of three months up to four years, and they will have to have served at least half of their sentence.

Minister defends scrapie ruling

THE EUROPEAN Commission’s directive for all member states to eradicate scrapie within 18 months “certainly doesn’t satisfy us completely”, the Agriculture Minister said yesterday.

Speaking after a parliamentary examination of his ministry’s budget, Michalis Polynikis said Cyprus’ dissatisfaction had been openly expressed when it abstained during the relevant vote.

High Commissioner shocked by terrorist attacks

THE INDIAN High Commissioner in Nicosia has expressed her profound shock at the unprecedented and brutal terrorist attacks in Mumbai, which have left scores of people dead.

In an interview with the Cyprus Mail yesterday, Lavanya Prasad said she failed to understand why such bloody attacks were on the increase in her homeland.
