CY boss warns crisis will deal severe blow to tourism

CYPRUS Airways (CY) chairman Kikis Lazarides yesterday weighed in on the global economic crisis, saying tourism would be the first sector to be hit.

Lazarides was speaking after a meeting with Tourism Minister Antonis Paschalides, representatives of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CT), and Eurocypria airlines.

Cancer the greatest challenge facing public health

APPROXIMATELY 3.2 million Europeans are diagnosed with cancer every year, Health Minister Christos Patsalides said yesterday.

Speaking at the presentation of the national Cancer Registry, Patsalides said these figures were expected to increase significantly in the coming years because of the ageing European population.

Man killed lethal drug cocktail

A LETHAL cocktail of heroin substitutes and impure cocaine is believed to have killed a 26-year-old man, found dead in his car late Monday night.

The victim, a permanent resident of Georgian origin, had gone missing on Saturday. Concerned friends and relatives contacted police, who began searching for him.

TEPAK warns budget cuts could jeopardise its future

LIMASSOL’S new Technological University, TEPAK, has warned its operations could be seriously affected by a massive cut in its budget next year. The university’s budget has been slashed by 45 per cent as part of a general expenditure downgrade by the state, in view of the global economic crisis.
