‘There is no window in smoking law’

“CYPRUS will have one of the strictest anti-smoking laws in Europe”.

This is the view expressed by DISY MP Andreas Themistocleous, who has told the Cyprus Mail that the extremity of the new laws on smoking are matched in Europe only by those of the UK and Ireland.

Suspect arrested in immigrants in container case

A 46-YEAR-OLD Cypriot man has been in connection with his possible involvement in the case of the 17 immigrants who were found in a container at Limassol Port on Tuesday.

The 46-year-old is believed to have prepared the paperwork for the container that would transport the immigrants from Limassol to Piraeus port and had picked the group up when they arrived in town.

Vassiliou saddened by ‘empty chair’ representing Cyprus in EU

EU Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou yesterday bemoaned the lack of Cypriot presence in Brussels-based events, even when the EU offers to pay for them. Vassiliou said she felt “truly saddened” by the “empty chair” phenomenon, referring specifically to the lack of Cypriot participation in the latest EU Youth Health Conference which took place in Brussels the last two days.

New art adorns negotiating rooms’ walls

THE NEXT instalment of art work by an all-female cast of Cypriot artists will be unveiled at the site of the peace talks next Monday by the UN’s special envoy, Alexander Downer, who will present a series of paintings, prints, handmade paper, collages, mixed media and installations.

National Council to convene July 24

Government Spokesman Stefanos Stefanou announced that the National Council – the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus question – will convene on July 24.

At the meeting, he said, political party leaders will discuss developments in the Cyprus question, in view of December 2009 and the evaluation of Turkey’s EU accession course.
