Court rules in favour of bank splinter union

THE NATIONAL Bank of Greece has scored another point in its ongoing feud with ETYK, the blanket union of bank employees.

ETYK had taken recourse to the Supreme Court, asking the court to declare as illegal a breakaway trade union formed by NBG employees with management’s blessings.

Man arrested for allegedly murdering girlfriend

A Turkish Cypriot man, said to be around 35 years old, was arrested last night for the suspected murder of his Romanian girlfriend.

According to initial police reports, the man, who lives in Potamia (Nicosia), is said to have confessed to strangling the woman – said to be of the same age – and thrown her body down a well in the village.

Huge increase in boys ducking military service

THE number of young men seeking deferment or exemption from military service has grown at an almost exponential rate during the last decade, according to press reports.

In the year 2000 the number of conscripts declared unfit for service due to psychological problems stood at 43, rising to 566 in 2006 and reaching 995 in 2008.
