Unscrupulous taxi drivers must be stopped

Two letters in the July 12 letters section referred to the outrageous, money-grabbing behaviour of some taxi drivers at Paphos airport. These are not isolated incidents.

In past years, a notice for arriving passengers displaying a guide to typical fares to popular destinations has been repeatedly defaced.

Semi-state board candidates wait on tenterhooks

PRESIDENT DEMETRIS Christofias has kept his government partners on tenterhooks regarding the upcoming renewals of the boards of directors on semi-governmental organisations.

A meeting yesterday at the presidential palace between Christofias and the heads of the AKEL, DIKO and EDEK parties had been designed to give the partners an inkling of the President’s intentions.

Temporary desalination plant proposed

THE GOVERNMENT has every intention of keeping its commitment to fulfil the island’s water needs independent of weather conditions by the end of next year.

Agriculture Minister Michalis Polynikis yesterday confirmed he had plans to propose the construction of a temporary mobile desalination plant before the Cabinet’s summer recess next week.

Paphos municipality feels the pinch

THE PAPHOS municipality has said that a reduction by 50 per cent in building permit applications will result in a huge drop in annual income.

The fall in demand in the construction industry translates to more than €200,000 in losses for the municipality, it said yesterday.
