More hunger strikes follow Block 10

ILLEGAL immigrants and failed asylum seekers in the Lakatamia holding cells embarked on a hunger strike yesterday, following those in the Central Prison’s Block 10, against their long-term stay in detention.

Police confirmed that around 15 people refused to eat the food provided to them at lunchtime in protest of their long-term stay in detention.

The hunger strike in Block 10 has been ongoing since October 24.

In an effort to boost their confidence, a support group, consisting mainly of Cypriots and a few immigrants turned up outside the Lakatamia holding cells last night and made their voices heard, according to lawyer Michalis Paraskevas, who was part of the group.

APOEL remain Group G leaders after dramatic Porto win

APOEL FC left it late to beat last year’s UEFA Europa League champions Portuguese powerhouse FC Porto 2-1 on the fourth matchday of the UEFA Champions League Group G last night at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia.

Gustavo Manduca’s injury time winner brought the Cypriot champions eight points from four group games so far.

Early in the game neither side could find their men and possession changed hands regularly. Perhaps the most interesting detail in the opening 15 minutes was Hulk’s white-blond hair, an interesting change in style for Porto’s Brazilian striker. However, it was Hulk who tried to push things forward after collecting the ball deep and attempting to work one-twos; however, the final ball was lacking.

Tales of whimsy and imagination

THE WEIRD and wonderful world of surrealism comes to the Apocalypse Gallery in Nicosia from today for two weeks only as

Theofilos Katsipanos a young talented Greek painter who has managed to stand out and receive excellent reviews for his work not long after graduating university, will be presenting his latest works.

At first the paintings of Katsipanos welcome us and draw us into the gallery with their rich, foreboding colours. A closer look at these compositions and one begins to feel puzzled by his naively executed human forms exuding a Lewis Caroll quality.

Pedal to the metal

FEW SPORTS offer as many thrills and spills as rallying and this week motorsport fans and competitors alike will get the chance to grab a piece of the action at the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC).

The Cyprus Rally dates back to 1970. Back then it was a long, rough, tough and ultimately destructive event, with unattainable average speeds and controls placed to extract maximum time penalties. However, it was efficiently organised and overseas visitors lured in by the hospitaliity and warm climate kept coming back for more.

Greece fear risks meltdown after bailout vote bombshell

THE GREEK government faces possible collapse as ruling party lawmakers demanded Prime Minister George Papandreou resign for throwing the nation’s euro membership into jeopardy with a shock call for a referendum.

Caught unawares by his high-stakes gamble, the leaders of France and Germany summoned Papandreou to crisis talks in Cannes today to push for a quick implementation of Greece’s new bailout deal ahead of a summit of the G20 major world economies.

Euro and global stocks were pummelled on financial markets after the Greek move threw into question the survival of crucial efforts to contain the euro zone’s sovereign debt crisis.

Berlusconi vows reform as opposition demands new government

PRIME Minister Silvio Berlusconi repeated promises of economic reform yesterday as Italian bonds came under renewed attack in the euro zone crisis and the centre-left opposition asked the president to name a new government.

With markets reeling from an unexpected decision by Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou to hold a referendum over austerity measures demanded by the European Union, Italian bonds were hit by a new wave of selling.

Yields on Italy’s 10 year BTP bonds rose to 6.34 per cent, an unsustainable level just short of the point they reached in August when the European Central Bank stepped in to prop up the market by buying Italian debt.

UK girls raped as gang 'weapons'

GIRLS are being used as weapons in disputes between rival gangs, Home Secretary Theresa May said yesterday.

May said girls and young women were often the girlfriends of gang members and were being raped by members of rival gangs as part of disputes.

She pledged at least £1.2 million over the next three years to improve services for young victims of sexual violence in major urban areas.

May admitted that girls could also be involved in gang violence themselves, but added: “More often they would be the victims.

“They would be the partners of gang members.

Late 2-1 win leaves Cypriots one point clear

Last-gasp APOEL Nicosia pulled off another shock by beating former European Cup winners Porto 2-1 to remain top of Group G on Tuesday and close to becoming the first Cypriot team to reach the Champions League last 16.

Gustavo Manduca struck on 90 minutes to send 25,000 fans into raptures after Porto, who were surprisingly held 1-1 by APOEL in Portugal last time, thought they had grabbed a point thanks to Hulk’s 89th minute penalty.

Ailton’s 42nd minute spotkick had given the impressive Cypriots the lead.

APOEL, rank outsiders before the competition, head the group by a point from Zenit St Petersburg with two matches left and a win at the Russians on Nov. 23 will sensationally send them to the knockout stages and guarantee them top spot with 11.
