Noble Energy: Aphrodite gas field contains 3-9 trillion cubic feet

NOBLE Energy announced today that Block 12 in Cyprus exclusive economic zone has an estimated 3-9 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of natural gas, with a 60 per cent chance of geological success.

Cypriot officials, who had previously given preliminary and estimated assessments that the block contained 8 to 10 tcf, said they would wait for results once drilling concluded in early to mid-December.

“I am sure that the findings will be satisfactory to all,” a Cypriot energy official told Reuters.

Legends unite for Joe Frazier's funeral

MUHAMMAD Ali, Larry Holmes and promoter Don King were just some of the mourners Joe Frazier’s funeral in Philadelphia yesterday.

Around 4,000 people gathered for the two-hour service at the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, where the Reverend Jesse Jackson led the tributes to remember Frazier, who died last week at the age of 67 following a short battle with liver cancer.

Jackson said: “Joe paid real dues and he’s a guy who we can emulate — an ordinary Joe with extraordinary things, He remained the guy from the streets.”

“He will be remembered as a great boxing champion, as a great humanitarian. He was world heavyweight champion. He didn’t inherit it – he earned it.”

Cyprus' GDP shrinks after Mari naval base blast

Cyprus’s gross domestic product contracted 0.7 percent in the third quarter on a quarterly basis, the statistics department said on Tuesday, after a massive munitions blast which destroyed the island’s largest power station on July 11.

GDP contracted by 0.6 percent on a year-on-year basis, it said in its flash estimates. Negative growth rates were recorded in the construction, manufacturing and electricity sectors, as well as in sectors of trade and transport. Positive growth rates were noted in tourism, banking and services, the statistics department said.

David Cameron slams 'pointless' EU rules

DAVID Cameron has delivered a blistering attack on “pointless” European Union rules and regulations which were stifling growth as it battled with the eurozone crisis.

The Prime Minister called for “fundamental reform” in Europe as he lambasted “out of touch” EU institutions demanding budget increases at a time of austerity for their citizens.

In his annual setpiece foreign policy speech to the Lord Mayor of London’s banquet, he dismissed talk of “grand plans and utopian visions” and called for a looser EU with “the flexibility of a network, not the rigidity of a bloc”.

His comments were in sharp contrast to Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel who has said dealing with the problems of the eurozone did not mean “less Europe, but more”.

New York police evict anti wall street protesters, 70 arrested

Police wearing helmets and carrying shields evicted protesters with the Occupy Wall Street movement early on Tuesday from the park in New York City’s financial district where they have camped since September.

Police spokesman Paul Browne said that about 70 protesters were arrested in Zuccotti Park during the nighttime operation for defying orders to leave and several more were arrested nearby, although most left voluntarily.

Authorities declared that the continued occupation of Zuccotti Park — which had become a sea of tents, tarps and protest signs with hundreds of demonstrators sleeping there — posed a health and safety threat.
