Baghdatis struggles through Aussie opener

Marcos Baghdatis edged out Spaniard Albert Ramos after a hard-fought five-set thriller which lasted more than four hours, as the Australian Open got underway in Melbourne on Monday.

The Cypriot struggled through 6-7(0), 7-6(4), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in a match on Margaret Court Arena that finished at 12.45am local time.

Omonia return to winning ways by beating champs AEL

AFTER their five-match winning streak was interrupted last week against AEK in Larnaca, Toni Savevski’s Omonia returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over AEL in Round 17 of the national football championship on Sunday afternoon at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia.

“All of our players deserve to be congratulated as we gave everything we had to win, but nothing is over yet. It is just a victory in the first of many important matches we have ahead of us,” said Omonia’s striker Dimitris Christofi who broke the deadlock three minutes before the half time interval with a short range effort, while Angolan forward Freddy set up the final score six minutes from time.
