A minute with Stavros Papageorghiou Film producer, director, owner of Tetraktys Film productions ltd company which is based in Nicosia

Where do you live?

I live in Aglanjia with my wife, our three children and our dog

Best childhood memory?

That summer night in 1969 when Apollo 11 landed on the moon, the neighbourhood kids, my two younger brothers and I were trying to spot the space capsule orbiting around moon with naked eye. Some of the kids claimed they could see it but not me. And I remember I got so upset because of that. Many years later, when I was studying in the US, on the anniversary of the first moonlanding, I found a collective 25 cent coin on the ground depicting the first US astronaut landed on the moon.

Giving villages a voice

Bored soldiers are ten a penny. But one who comes up and plans a successful website while on guard duty is someone extraordinary. ALIX NORMAN meets an outstanding web mind

I have met the next Stelios Hajioannou. He lives in Limassol. Well, he’s based in Limassol, but is studying in the UK, and I was lucky enough to catch up with him in Nicosia during his reading week. How can I be so sure he’s Cyprus’ next big entrepreneur?

The Dating Diaries: The first reactions

To my amazement, within two days of posting my online dating profile there followed a torrent of despair, desire, tragedy and longing. It was there for all to read in the applications coming my way. The age bracket turned out to be totally irrelevant; the youngest lady was 19, the oldest 70. I also learned that many stunningly beautiful and willing white ladies had recently immigrated to Ghana, truly a country of great climate and attraction. Frankly I can’t blame them. A gorgeous Native American white lady had, according to her profile, of all places lived in Greenland. She told me frankly and ‘viri convitenzili’ that it was, not unexpected to me, too cold in Greenland.

Film review: Upside Down**

We get so few films in Cyprus cinemas – two a week on average, once you discount the dubbed kids’ cartoons and occasional Greek movies – that it’s always a surprise when something like Upside Down turns up. It’s a big-budget film, yet it comes to us with no reputation (it hasn’t even opened yet in the US or most of Europe) and features a pair of not-quite-stars in Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst. It’s not even Hollywood, having been made with French and Canadian money. None of this precludes it being excellent, of course (though it’s actually a mixed bag), it just makes you wonder: why, out of all possible films, did the powers-that-be schedule this one?

Restaurant review: Greco’s Nest, Nicosia

There is something immediately welcoming about Greco’s that is missing in a nearby newly opened establishment that also majors in fish. The floor is divided into small bays that engender an atmosphere of intimacy that is conducive to conversation and quiet enjoyment. It is Thursday evening and there are a dozen diners comfortably seated and casually dressed – nothing very formal about Greco’s.

Bar review: The Brewery Bar & Restaurant, Larnaca

Larnaca’s most emblematic street is home to a number of different cafés, bars and restaurants – Phinikoudes does not lack options but few have stood the test of time longer than The Brewery Bar & Restaurant.

With variety being high on the list of requirements for any establishment these days, The Brewery offers a number of choices when it comes to eating and drinking, leaving even its frequent visitors with a lengthy decision on their hands.
