Baseball bat beating

A 22-year-old man was arrested early yesterday in Limassol after allegedly spraying harmful gases in a petrol station and beating a 41-year-old customer with a baseball bat.
The 22-year-old and two other individuals entered the petrol station office area where the 41-year-old owner, his wife and customers were and started spraying harmful gas and shouting. The 22-year-old then got a baseball bat from his car and hit the 41-year-old customer on the arm and his side.
The 41-year-old customer was taken to the Limassol General Hospital where he was diagnosed with a fractured arm.

Suspect documents

A 26-YEAR-OLD Ghanian man was arrested on Sunday afternoon in Paphos on suspicion of possessing forged documents.
According to police the 26-year-old presented a Spanish residential document which expires in 2015. His passport did not have a republic of Cyprus seal on the date when he arrived in Cyprus.
The 26-year-old claimed that he had been working in Spain for the past ten years although he does not speak Spanish. He could not provide police with a satisfactory explanation as to why he has a Spanish residential document and about when he came to Cyprus.

Foiled bank burglary

AN ATTEMPTED burglary of a Bank of Cyprus branch in Paliometocho early yesterday ended in failure.
According to police the burglars broke into a private tutoring institute next to the bank and demolished part of a wall in a failed attempt to break into the bank’s vault.
They then broke into another building connected to the bank and demolished part of that wall. During this attempt they found and managed to cut part of the metal safe but were unable to break into it.
The bank’s alarm system then went off and the burglars fled without taking anything.
The Kokkinotrimithia police station is continuing investigations.

In defence of Cyprus

I CAN still remember the month of June in 2003, when President Clerides came back to Nicosia from the European Council carrying the EU’s unanimous decision admitting Cyprus as a new member state. European and Cypriot flags were unfurled all along Makarios Avenue, the blast of thousands of horns kept beeping for hours and Cypriot zivania was brought out in all public places and cafés on the island, as it celebrated joyfully the recognition of Cyprus as a part of European territory.
