Inquiry into economic debacle kicks off

AN investigative commission appointed by the government to look into how the country was led to the brink of financial ruin kicked off its public hearings this morning.

The hearing started at 9.30am with finance ministry permanent secretary Christos Patsalides being the first to testify.

The commission is made up of former Supreme Court judges Giorgos Pikis and Panayiotis Kallis and active Supreme Court judge Andreas Kramvis.

Kramvis will retire next month.

The inquiry will cover the period between 2006 and March 2013.

The commission is assisted by a group of experts.

NEW: Police officer shot to death at MIT campus near Boston

A POLICE officer for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was shot to death on Thursday night at the school’s Cambridge campus, touching off a manhunt in a community on edge just days after the Boston Marathon bombing.
Police descended on a vehicle in the neighbouring Watertown community later in the evening amid reports of gunfire and explosions, the ABC TV station in Boston reported. One suspect was in police custody, local media reported.
Reuters was not immediately able to verify the reports.
Police officers with weapons drawn, and people wearing FBI and ATF jackets could be seen in the live video.

FBI releases photos of two Boston bomb suspects

Investigators released pictures and video of two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing yesterday, enlisting the public’s help in identifying two men wearing backpacks and baseball caps in the crowd minutes before bombs exploded near the finish line.
A 30-second video shows the men known only as Suspect 1 and Suspect 2 walking single file a few paces apart along Boylston Street in central Boston. One wears a dark baseball cap and sunglasses. The other has a white baseball cap turned backwards.
The time stamp is 2:37 p.m., roughly 13 minutes before two bombs backed with nails and ball bearings tore through the crowd, killing three people and wounding 176 including at least 10 who suffered amputations.
