Police and scouts join forces to raise road awareness

THE TRAFFIC police and the Cyprus Scouts Association were yesterday offering an amnesty for the day to drivers who committed specific traffic violations.
The aim was to raise awareness among the boy scouts who passed warnings to the offending motorists. Separate events took place in Paphos and Paralimni.
Offences included speaking on a mobile while driving, not wearing a seatbelt,  not following road signs and illegal parking, all of which are punishable with on-the-spot fines.
Nicos Sofokleous, head of the Paphos police said the campaign sent a message to the public to become more law-abiding on the roads.
Nicos Mitsides, the Cyprus Scouts Association district superintendent in Paphos thanked the police for joining the awareness campaign.

Young athlete loses battle with cancer

CYPRUS’ sport was yesterday left mourning the death of 23-year-old athlete Marianna Zachariades who lost her battle with lymphoma after falling into a coma recently in Greece.
The Cypriot long-jumper had been suffering from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma since 2011 and was being nursed at the Attikon Hospital in Greece after recently falling into a coma. She had claimed a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and the Mediterranean Games in Pescara in 2009, where she had set a Pancyprian record jump of 4.45m.
Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is a cancer originating from white blood Cells called lymphocytes. It was named after Thomas Hodgkin, who first described abnormalities in the lymph system in 1832.

Tractor injuries

OVER THE weekend two men were treated for injuries caused in two separate tractor accidents in Paphos.
George Stylianou, 50, was seriously injured on Saturday afternoon in a rural area of Kathika when his tractor overturned.
Stylianou is in the intensive care unit of Paphos general hospital. According to doctors his condition is serious but he has shown signs of improvement.
Socratis Vasiliadi, 60, received slight injuries to his legs when his tractor overturned on Sunday afternoon on the rural road between Ayia Marina Kelokedaron and Kelokedara.
According to police the tractor , which was towing a wagon carrying a water tank, overturned on a turning.
In both cases the tractors did not have protective covers.

Busy weekend

THE FIRE Services were called to extinguish a total of 221 fires over the weekend. The number is considered to be very high and in a statement yesterday the services called on the public to be especially careful. The sharp increase in temperatures over the weekend and the reduced humidity in the atmosphere combined with strong winds were conducive for fires to start and spread.
The Fire Service reminded the public that starting a fire, throwing cigarette butts away or any other actions which could start a fire are prohibited.

School arson

A FIRE was set in the Technical school in Nicosia after vandals broke in on Sunday at around 10.30pm, police said yesterday. The perpetrators broke into an office, set fire to a couch and coffee table and also stole a computer. They also broke into a classroom, took chairs and plastic bins which they later set fire to. The Lykavitos police station is investigating.

Canteen fire

A FIRE broke out in Acropolis primary school’s canteen in Nicosia at around 7.30pm on Sunday, causing damage to the door and window. After the blaze was extinguished by the fire department, tests showed it has started in a fireplace outside the canteen.

Bike fire

A MOTORBIKE parked in a kindergarten car park in Nicosia caught on fire at around 1am yesterday. The fire, which was extinguished by fire department, destroyed the vehicle. The cause of the fire is being investigated by Nicosia CID.

Man beaten

A 34-YEAR-OLD Indian man was beaten on the head with a bat by an unknown man outside a convenience store in Limassol at around 6.15pm on Sunday. The Indian man was taken to the Limassol general hospital and treated for a head injury. Due to the seriousness of his condition he was transferred to Nicosia general hospital where he underwent surgery. Police are investigating the motive for the attack.
