Police delay eviction of Occupy LA camp

POLICE in riot gear began closing in early this morning on some 2,000 anti-Wall Street activists who defied a midnight deadline to vacate an eight-week-old encampment outside Los Angeles City Hall as some protesters blocked traffic.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa had given Occupy LA protesters until midnight local time to dismantle their tents, pack up their belongings and clear out of the City Hall park, or face a forcible removal.

But Jim Lafferty, a National Lawyers Guild attorney and leading advocate for protesters in talks with the city, said two hours after the eviction deadline that police had assured him “there will be no move against this occupation tonight.”

EuroBasket 2013 qualifying seedings unveiled

FIBA Europe has announced the seedings for the EuroBasket 2013 and the EuroBasket Women 2013 Qualification Rounds as well as the 2011 Youth European Championships 2012 Draw last week, with the draws taking place in a small city near Munich in a week time.

With the results of the EuroBasket 2011 campaign taken into account, the Cypriot men’s national team has been placed in the fifth seedings group alongside Belarus, Slovakia, Romania, Albania and Luxembourg. 

Serbia, Turkey and Germany will be the top seeded nations together with Finland and Georgia who made it to the Second Round in Lithuania and Croatia who post the better coefficient among the teams which ended their campaign after the EuroBasket 2011 First Round.

Stakes rise in Champions League qualifiers

After a week of controversy caused mainly by FIFA president Sepp Blatter’s comments about racism, UEFA will hope that action on the pitch dominates this week’s Champions League headlines as the group stage reaches crunch time.

Former European champions Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Ajax Amsterdam will bid to seal their places in the last 16 and join Real Madrid, AC Milan and holders Barcelona in the knockout rounds.

English trio Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea can also take their places with a match to spare while this season’s surprise packages APOEL Nicosia will become the first team from Cyprus to reach the last 16 if they win at Zenit St Petersburg.
