Cabinet freezes rents for two years

THE CABINET yesterday decided to freeze controlled rents for the next two years in light of the deteriorating economic situation in Cyprus. 

Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou said the decision to block rent increases from April 22, 2013 until April 21, 2015 for “controlled areas”, was taken as a result of the impact of the economic crisis, particularly on small and medium-sized businesses who rent property, shops or offices. 

Under Cypriot rent laws, landlords can increase rents by a maximum of 14 per cent every two years.

Bidder for BFBS contract says tender flawed

A CONSORTIUM is claiming significant flaws in the tendering process to broadcast to the British forces in Cyprus and other military locations after the Ministry of Defence awarded the British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS) a new ten-year contract.

The “Future Forces Broadcast Services” contract, worth up to €31 million per year, is due to start in April 2013, providing “a service that delivers unclassified information, entertainment and education to the British Armed Forces community worldwide”. 

Garrison Radio, which runs radio military stations on British bases in the UK, responded to a MoD tender in late 2011 along with four interested companies, including current operator BFBS.
