NEW: Regulator cuts electricity prices by 5pc

IN light of the serious economic crisis sweeping the island, the energy regulator (CERA) decided to cut the price of electricity by 5.0 per cent, it was announced today.

The reduction will be temporary and will be reviewed every two months, CERA said.

The reduction follows a recent decision to scrap a 5.75 per cent surcharge on electricity bills imposed after the Mari naval-base munitions explosion incapacitated Cyprus’ largest power station.

Pensioner robbed at home

ACCORDING to police reports, an 81-year-old woman was shocked on Wednesday night as an unknown, hooded man barged into her home. The woman was standing in the kitchen in the village of Mouttalos in Paphos when a young man dressed all in black with black sunglasses, believed by police to be Greek-Cypriot,  came in. The man demanded money from the old lady and when she initially declined he pushed her to the ground. The 81-year-old, scared that her assailant would cause her more harm, handed over €900 after he had searched the house and been unable to find anything, police said.

New home for lion cubs

TWO SEVEN-month old lion cubs arrived at Paphos Animal and Bird Park after a sixteen hour flight from South Africa late Wednesday and began settling into their new home yesterday. They are currently the only lions in Cyprus.

Dias and Hera are the names given to the two lions by park founder Christos Christoforou,

“Many people have been asking us to get lions for a long time and we are all so happy to finally have them here with us. They are so friendly and playful and settled into their new enclosure immediately,” he said.

“They are very beautiful creatures and we now have our first cats at the park,” he said adding, “We will get some more lions from a zoo in Denmark, they will be arriving in the middle of September.”
