Sea rich Cyprus looks at using wave energy

THE PROSPECTS for exploiting renewable energy within Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the eastern Mediterranean were discussed yesterday during a workshop on wave energy potential.

The E-Wave project is a major research project on exploitation of wave energy in Cyprus, which started in January 2011. The project duration is 24 months and is co-ordinated by the Oceanographic Centre of the University of Cyprus.

Opposition call for Christofias to step down as Cyprus negotiator

THE DIVIDE between government and opposition over the outcome of the New York talks widened yesterday, amid calls on Christofias to step down as the Greek Cypriot negotiator.

Prodromos Prodromou, a member of DISY’s Executive Bureau, released a statement last night urging Christofias to step down as Greek Cypriot negotiator.

Prodromou said he was elaborating on an idea floated earlier this week by his party boss, Nicos Anastassiades. In his statement, Prodromou said Parliament should ask Christofias to “abstain” from Cyprus negotiations, following the “debacle” at Greentree.

The legislature could select another person “of broad acceptance” to take over.  This person would be given a mandate by the National Council.

Van arson

A VAN was set on fire during the early hours of yesterday morning in Tseri, Nicosia.

The van was destroyed completely as a result of the fire, which was put out by the Fire Department.

According to police reports, the van was taken there by unknown persons, who doused it in a flammable substance, then set fire to it.

AN ARTICLE in yesterday’s paper inaccurately stated that the Limassol Water Board will increase prices so that a household will have to pay €0.96 for every 40 cubic metres of water, and industry will have to pay €1.04. These prices actually apply per cubic metre for the first 40 cubic metres of water used.
