Tensions high after police raid

TENSIONS WERE high on a strip of the buffer zone dissecting the capital yesterday after a police raid the night before resulted in 28 arrests, including 11 minors, numerous claims of police brutality and human rights violations.

A strong police force spearheaded by the anti-terrorist unit (MMAD) and the drugs squad raided a building on the corner of Nicosia’s Ledra and Kykkos streets on Friday night at around 10.15pm.

The building stands between two checkpoints straddling the buffer zone along Ledra Street, and became the makeshift home to a multi-communal peace movement called Occupy Buffer Zone which has been camped at the site since last November.

AEL and APOEL record important victories

APOEL’s manager Ivan Jovanovic was a happy man after watching his side sweep Ermis Aradippou aside with a confident attacking display that resulted in a 4-1 away win.

“We wanted to score quick goals and that helped us to play more comfortably in the second half,” he reflected. “Ermis is a team with a great fighting spirit and they need to be congratulated on their attitude. However, it was very important for us that we approached the game as serious as we possibly could and that we kept our focus on a high level throughout.

Review: The 52nd Thessaloniki International Film Festival

It didn’t take long for me to realise that Greece is a country in flux. Before I’d even plonked down my bags in my hotel room, while I was still fiddling with the card-key, I overheard a man talking on his phone in the corridor. He spoke of deals and meetings, like any businessman – but then, just before he hung up (and just before I walked into my room), I heard him add, with a sort of resigned casualness: “Oh, and by the way – who’s Prime Minister?”.

Biden to discuss Cyprus in Greece

13:23 U.S. Vice President Joe Biden will travel on Sunday to Athens, where he will deliver symbolically important support to Greece’s new Prime Minister Lucas Papademos.

He will also meet with President Karolos Papoulias and the leaders of the two largest Greek political parties.

Biden is expected to discuss Cyprus and the need to keep tensions in check around oil and gas exploration in the Eastern Mediterranean, where Cyprus plans to issue exploration licences despite Turkish objections.

The visit is likely to be dominated by the ongoing debt crisis in Greece, which could unravel the wider euro zone and tip the United States back into recession.

In-form Anorthosis face AEK in derby

14:16 ANORTHOSIS manager Ronny Levy expressed the hope his side can continue to build on a six-match undefeated run when they take on local rivals AEK this afternoon at 6pm at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaca.

“We have an important game ahead of us, as we do every week. What we need to focus on is maintaining our consistency. I believe that we are on the right track. The game will be difficult as it is a city derby which has a particular relevance for our club and our fans,” Levy said.

“However, with the support of our great fans we can get a good result if we stick to our game plan,” he added.
