Parents of blind baby raise funds for treatment in China

FRIENDS and family of a baby boy from Paphos who has been blind since birth are appealing to the public to help raise funds to go towards his treatment in China.

Iordanis Demetrof (Dani) was born to his Bulgarian mother on March 1,t 2011. He has since been diagnosed with severe optic disc hypoplasia by a specialist doctor at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

Family friend, Nadia Frangeskou, is helping to raise awareness of the baby’s plight and said that numerous fund raising events had already been held in Paphos to raise cash for Dani’s treatment.

CERA says it will look into reducing cost of electricity

THE ELECTRICITY Authority (EAC) defended itself yesterday against accusations from the Energy Regulator that they were out to make a profit from high electricity prices.

“The EAC has no right to increase or reduce electricity prices, this is a wrong impression that people have,” said EAC chairman Harris Thrassou, adding that they had no objection to an assessment of tariffs.

Thrassou was defending the EAC against accusations at the House Commerce Committee from the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) which said that it was inconceivable the EAC should try and maintain profit margins at pre-Mari levels. 

Vice-chairman of CERA, Constantinos Eliopoulos called on the authority to exercise some ‘self-restraint.’
