Church of England's Archbishop of Canterbury to step down

The Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, spiritual leader of the Anglican Communion, who has long struggled to prevent a schism over women and gay bishops and same-sex unions, announced on Friday he will step down at the end of the year.

The 80-million-strong worldwide Communion has been threatened with division for several years, with reformists and conservatives failing to bend to his authority or attempts at consensus.

Williams, 61, the head of the Church of England, the Anglican mother church, will return to academia, taking up a role as Master of Magdalene College, a senior role at Cambridge University. He previously taught theology at Cambridge and Oxford universities.

The normal retirement age for Church of England bishops is 70.

Editor’s choice: Reader’s letter : Cyprus as an international business centre is under threat

I AM sure I cannot be alone in my alarm at the increasingly pessimistic official and media reports I see regarding the Cyprus economy. 

I am even more concerned that the official response to the dire state of the public finances has put the financial burden exclusively on the private sector, its employees and consumers, without any significant steps having been taken to control wasteful government expenditure.

Music: Folk melodies infused with jazz standards

From the age of two, Armenian-born Hamasyan showed an extraordinary interest towards music.

Although first moved as a child by the rock sounds of the Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Queen and Deep Purple, he started singing and learning to play the piano. 

At seven, Hamasyan discovered jazz and pursued classical music studies, composing his first pieces at the tender age of 10. In 1998 and 2000, the young prodigy performed to great acclaim at the Yerevan Jazz Festival, resulting in various contest prizes around the world.
