Louis named passenger line of the year in Greece

LOUIS Cruises has been awarded the ‘2010 Passenger Line of the year’ at the annual Lloyds List Greek Shipping Awards in Athens over the weekend.

The award was given to Louis Loizou, Executive Director of Louis Group on behalf of his father Costakis Loizou, the Group’s Executive Chairman and the 8,500 Louis Group staff. Loizou said that the award coincided with the 75th anniversary of the group’s founding in 1935, and 55 years after Louis Group started its operations in Greece.

Referring to the difficult times Greece was currently facing, Loizou said he believed Greek tourism has a great future,  especially in cruising, and urged everyone to work hard to re-establish Greece’s  leading position on the world cruising map.

Our View: Eurocypria case a much-needed wake up call for Cyprus Airways

IF THERE was one thing we should have learnt from the Eurocypria saga, it is that even at state-owned organizations, job security is not guaranteed. Since we joined the EU, the option of pumping the taxpayer’s money into loss-making state companies or corporations, in order to protect jobs, no longer exists. The EU reminded us of this on Friday when delegations from Eurocypria and Cyprus Airways went to Brussels, supposedly to discuss the merger of the two airlines.

Motor vehicle registrations down 14 per cent

NEWLY-REGISTERED vehicles have recorded a 14 per cent decrease in the first six months of the year, the statistical service said yesterday.

The service said newly-registered vehicles reached 23,562 compared with 27,389 in the same period last year.

Passenger vehicle registrations dipped 16.8 per cent in the first half of the year – 16,514 compared with 19,838 in 2009.

Some 44 per cent of the passenger vehicles – 7,307 – were new while the rest – 9,207 – were used, the statistical service said.

Trucks and vans on showed a 2.9 per cent increase – due to the increase in the sales of light trucks – reaching 3,926 registrations.
